A year later, the company built the first true McLaren race car – the M1 (24 customer cars were produced by Elva). Its successor, the M1B, allowed McLaren into the Can-Am championship, where it dominated with 43 victories, almost three times more than rival Porsche.[8] In 1965, the first McLaren Formula One car, the M2B, debuted at the Monaco Grand Prix. McLaren’s Formula One founder Bruce McLaren was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1937,[5] and learned about cars and engineering at his parents’ service station and workshop there. By 15, he had entered a local hillclimb in an Austin 7 Ulster, winning his first race in the car.[6] In 1958, McLaren arrived in the United Kingdom with the ‘Driver to Europe’ scheme, intended to help Australian and New Zealand racers to compete in Europe. His mentor, Jack Brabham, introduced him to Cooper Cars, a small team based in Surbiton, Surrey. Auspiciously starting his Formula One career in 1958, McLaren joined the Formula One team a year later.

However, the season started with a massive crash at the Australian Grand Prix in which Fernando Alonso sustained rib fractures and a collapsed lung after colliding with Esteban Gutiérrez and somersaulting into the crash barriers. Alonso, as a result of his injuries, was forced to miss the second round of the Championship, the Bahrain Grand Prix, and was replaced by reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne. Vandoorne produced an impressive performance in his first race to score the team’s first point of the season with 10th place. The next points for McLaren came at the Russian Grand Prix with Alonso and Button finishing sixth and 10th respectively.
What’s less talked about is how South-African Formula 1 car designer Gordon Murray got McLaren’s first production road car in motion. He had been thinking about a road car, but in 1988, the company’s directors decided just building a “regular” supercar would be too easy. That was music to Murray’s ears, and he sat down and wrote a four-page manifesto on how the supercar would not compromise anything. For example, there would be no plastic used; the car would do 200 mph, pull over 1g in lateral acceleration, and be based around an F1-derived monocoque chassis with a safety cell to protect the three occupants. Furthermore, the driver would be centrally situated and the car would use an F1-based push-pull rod suspension, and so on.
The main building was designed by architect Norman Foster as a semi-circle with a lake completing the circle. There are four more lakes on the site and around 13 million gallons of water are pumped commitment of traders forex through the building’s heat exchangers to cool it and dissipate the heat generated by running the wind tunnels. The second building is the McLaren Production Centre, which was built in 2011.
The M6B was shelved, but Bruce McLaren didn’t give up on his road car dream. In 1970, he created a prototype by merging the M6B chassis with an M6 GT body and a Chevrolet engine tuned by BARTZ. The wild M6GT became his daily driver, and there was talk of it being put into a 250-unit production run, but the idea was shelved when Bruce McLaren was killed on June 2, 1970.

The Super Series, considered to be McLaren’s core model range, originally included the 650S, 625C, and 675LT. These were replaced with the 720S in 2017 (and 720S Spider in 2018). The high-end Ultimate Series was led by the P1 and P1 GTR, now it includes the Senna, Senna GTR and the upcoming Speedtail, intended to be the successor to the original F1. The F1 and 12C were retroactively included in the Ultimate and Super Series, respectively.

As part of the Ultimate Series, McLaren was the first to deliver a hybrid hypercar, the McLaren P1™. However, both the team not being able to work out why the car could not heat its tyres properly in the early stages of the season and the overall unreliability of the MP4-20 cost several race victories when Räikkönen had been leading or in contention to win and also costing him grid positions in some qualifying sessions, which allowed Renault and their driver Fernando Alonso to capitalise and win both titles. In 2000 McLaren won seven races in a close fight with Ferrari, but ultimately Ferrari and Schumacher prevailed in both competitions. This marked the start of a decline in form as Ferrari cemented their dominance of Formula One and also beryllium engine material banned in Formula One that affected Mercedes engine performance.
Bruce McLaren started Bruce McLaren Motor Racing in 1963 and the team first entered Formula One in 1966.[5] Teddy Mayer took over direction of the group following McLaren’s death while testing a Can-am series car in 1970. Mayer subsequently led McLaren to their first World Constructors’ Championship in 1974 with Brazilian driver Emerson Fittipaldi, who also won the World Drivers’ Championship that year. In an exceptionally smart piece of branding, Mclaren produced an animated cartoon series that ran for three seasons.
